(Reads US Drivers’ Licenses with Magstripe only. Does NOT read PDF-417 Barcode that is encoded on over 40 States. No data storage capability.)
A portable, handheld/countertop magnetic stripe card reader that reads driver's licenses and ID cards.
Note: You should also select, at no extra charge, the option to read Canadian Health Card or USA INS (Immigration and Naturalization Services) Card. This model does not read CA-Health & INS card.
- A device containing a real time clock that can be set to "Year, Month, Day, Hour and Minute".
- Controls a backlighted display and green, yellow, and red LEDS to indicate the cardholder's Age.
- Operates either as a stand-alone utilizing a rechargeable battery, or through the use of a 7.5-volt DC power supply provided with the reader.
- The 1-line, 16-character long display is used to show: Age, Current Date & Time, and other information depending upon the reader status.
- Power on/off switch.
PRODUCT FUNCTION:
- It reads the Birth Date and Expiration Date encoded on a driver's license/ID card and compares the data to the real time clock settings.
- It controls the display and 3 LEDS to indicate the Age and License validity.
- Minimizes power drain on the battery through the use of a backlight time-out process during idle time.
DISPLAY/LED FUNCTIONAL SPECIFICATIONS:
- When the power switch is on, the display shows the current Date & Time as:
HR, MN, MM/DD/YY (AM) or (PM) or M (Military Time)
- When a driver's license is read, the verifier backlights a display of the age and date of birth for five seconds, along with the appropriate LED illumination as follows:
- The green LED is illuminated if the age is 21 years old, or older.
- The yellow LED is illuminated if the age is 18 through 20 years old.
- The red LED is illuminated if their age is less 18.
- For an expired driver's license the verifier will, momentarily, backlight and display the word 'EXPIRED' with all LEDS illuminated, followed by a five second backlit display of the birth date and illumination of the appropriate LED.
- For a card read error the verifier will, for five seconds, backlight a display of the words "CARD ERROR" and illuminate all LEDS. Card errors occur due to defective or "dirty" cards, improper cards, and erratic card movement during a "swipe".
- The verifier will default to initial clock and LED status within five seconds of any card read function.
NOTES:
- The user should always compare the Date of Birth and the photograph on the license to the cardholder.
- If the license has expired, you must follow the law, or company policy, to determine if you can sell alcoholic beverages or other age-sensitive products or services to the cardholder.
CLOCK SETUP SPECIFICATIONS:
Two recessed buttons, SEL and SET, require depression by a pointed object, such as a paper clip, to edit the current date and time. Once started, an edit sequence must be completed to store the new data. The sequence is as follows:
- Depression of the select (SEL) button backlights the display and blinks the first clock digit to be edited. Each depression selects the next digit until the editing is complete, signified by the backlight being extinguished.
- Once a clock item is selected the set (SET) button is used to increment the count of that item.
- The age verifier will time out the clock editing function after a reasonable period of idle.
BATTERY INFORMATION - POWER DRAIN
When used in a portable mode, the display will default to time and date and the backlight will be extinguished to conserve power. To further conserve power the user is instructed to turn power off if time and date are being displayed and there are no more operations required. There is no other on/off indication.
The portable will "trickle charge" the internal battery when the power plug is inserted into the reader power jack and the power switch is turned ON. Turning the power switch OFF under these conditions will place the batteries on "deep charge." A "trickle charge" will provide about 3 hours of portable use. A "deep charge" will provide about 8 hours of portable use.
If the verifier is used in portable mode for 8 hours it will take about 8 hours of "deep charge" to regain the power lost. Leaving the unit on "deep charge" overnight guarantees a full charge. The unit will be slightly warm after 8 hours of "deep charge" time. It is recommended that the battery not be in "deep charge" mode for over 16 hours. Continuous "deep charge" will not hurt anything except the battery will remain warm and this might shorten its life over years of use.
BATTERY POWER DESCRIPTION:
The reader clock and other configuration settings are powered by an internal coin cell battery, independent of the power source, to maintain these items in the event there is a dead battery, or if the 5-volt power adapter is unplugged. This battery is soldered in place and has a life of several years.
The verifier computer battery pack is installed with a quality connector to avoid intermittent failure characteristics associated with spring contacts such as those used in flashlights. To insure uninterrupted operation in event of a power outage the computer always runs on this internal nickel-metal hydride battery pack. A regulated 5-volt, 1 ampere power adapter with the center contact positive is required. DO NOT USE ANY POWER ADAPTER THAT DOES NOT MATCH THE SPECIFICATIONS, OR DAMAGE MAY OCCUR AND VOID THE WARRANTY. Battery replacement can be done by returning the verifier to the factory or by a qualified technician.
Options: Hand Strap. 'MSRCLEAN - Magstripe Head Cleaning Cards' (MSR Clean Machine) can help keep the read heads operating at optimum performance. Pre-saturated cleaning cards have a two year shelf life. They are offered in quantities of 10, 20 or in 50 count, shrink-wrapped boxes. Use them every at least every two weeks or whenever necessary, to keep your read heads operating at optimum performance.
