Beall's Preps for the Future of Payments with SAP POS

Beall's has installed the SAP Point-of-Sale (SAP POS) application to improve the customer experience and meet future payment regulatory requirements. The retailer was in need of a system upgrade in its 450 Beall's Outlet and Burke's Outlet stores.

The company wanted a solution that would support future customer experience initiatives, as well as payment regulatory requirements for payment card industry (PCI) and Europay, Mastercard, Visa (EMV, a global standard for credit and debit payment cards based on chip card technology.

"We feel that it is important to have a technology infrastructure that can carry us through the future," said Dave Massey, SVP and CIO for Beall's. "SAP POS allowed us to upgrade to a more effective system while supporting both EMV and point-to-point encryption, a feature that provides exceptional security for sensitive customer data during the transaction process. In addition, SAP POS provides a number of new user exit and extension capabilities that allow Beall's to expand the solution capability for our future needs."

The retailer's previous POS system was costly to maintain and limited in functionality, making the shopper experience cumbersome at times. By replacing it with the 2.3 version of SAP POS, Beall's can process transactions faster and leverage new marketing and customer relationship management capabilities. It also has an improved graphical interface, allowing Beall's store associates guidance throughout the transactions.

Previously, the POS associate interface was limited to two-line text displays without graphics. Now the new system has an intuitive touchscreen POS client with built-in browser technology that makes it easy for employees to provide a superior customer experience.

AT&T and IBM Join Forces for A Cloud-Based E-Commerce Solution

AT&T and IBM announced a business agreement to deliver an e-commerce solution to help retailers provide a consistent shopping experience for customers whether they are shopping online, via mobile or in-store. The service, expected to be available this year, combines AT&T's cloud, application management and network services with e-commerce software from IBM's Smarter Commerce in a single, subscription-based package designed for retailers.

The two companies are working together to provide retailers with an e-commerce suite that will improve the online consumer shopping experience and make it easier to browse and buy products any time through any channel, offering retailers several benefits, including:

  • The ability to efficiently scale up website and application hosting to meet promotional and seasonal needs, without making additional capital investment, through predictable monthly pricing and integrated software licensing
  • Access to IBM WebSphere Commerce, enabling companies to offer a smooth customer experience across every channel
  • Enhanced network and application security, availability and performance with hosting and application management from AT&T
  • Increased speed to market through integrated, pre-tested 'starter store' options
  • Reduced vendor management with a single contract for the entire solution
  • Integration with other AT&T digital media, network, security, mobility and cloud solutions including digital signage, in-store WiFi, Web application firewall management, mobile marketing and business intelligence
  • A predictable monthly pricing format that eliminates the up-front licensing fees typical to e-commerce solutions.

The solution will be available in the U.S. and backed by AT&T's outstanding customer service and technical support. The announcement also extends the IBM Commerce on Cloud capabilities for online and omnichannel sales to the AT&T Cloud.

Shift4 Announces P2PE Capabilities for Micros POS

Shift4 Corporation has announced plug-and-play Point-to-Point Encryption (P2PE) capabilities for MICROS point-of-sale (POS) systems.

The complexity of development and implementation of P2PE has been a barrier to entry for many merchants. This solution solves that issue by using our proprietary technologies, along with an existing integration to MICROS, to make adoption easy for merchants.

By leveraging their existing 4Go® for MICROS solution, Shift4 has made it possible for merchants using MICROS 3700, 9700, or Simphony POS systems along with Shift4’s DOLLARS ON THE NET® payment gateway to gain near-instant access to their P2PE solution. All they have to do is plug in and configure a compliant ID TECH® encrypted swipe device.

With this solution in place, the MICROS POS remains free of sensitive cardholder data and therefore out of scope of PCI. This means merchants with legacy MICROS solutions that may no longer be PA-DSS validated can maintain PCI compliance without having to update their systems. Merchants using current, compliant MICROS solutions gain an added layer of security and the benefits of a drastically reduced card data environment. In fact, with Shift4’s P2PE solution fully implemented, only the swipe device remains in scope for PCI assessments.

Existing Shift4 merchant customers interested in using this solution should contact Shift4 Support to learn more. Interested merchants who are not current Shift4 customers should email info@shift4.com for additional information and a list of certified devices.
