NCR VAR Provides Independent Grocer with POS Solution

NCR Corporation has noted that Maywood Market has selected its point-of-sale (POS) software and hardware solutions, along with BRdata's back office solutions, to provide a faster and more convenient shopping experience and run in-store promotions. The solutions were sold and serviced by NCR authorized reseller North Country Business Products (NCBP).

For the front of the store, Maywood Market chose NCR Advanced Checkout Solution (ACS), a feature-rich POS software application for grocery retailers, regardless of store size or sales volume. Each checkout lane will be equipped with an NCR RealPOS High Performance Bi-Optic Scanner/Scale, an NCR RealPOS 80XRT workstation with the NCR RealPOS DynaKey cashier interface, and a credit/debit card reader with signature capture.

Expected to open in early 2010, Maywood Market will contain a bakery, meat and seafood departments, a deli, frozen food section, fresh fruits and vegetables and dairy products.

In addition to rehabilitating a building near the heart of the Village of Maywood, Ill. at 615 South Fifth Ave., the owners are investing in technology designed to deliver a fast and convenient shopping experience while optimizing operational efficiency.

Maywood Market also plans to implement the NCR ACS Consumer Marketing (CM) module.
North Country Business Products recently expanded into Chicago and met with Maywood Market almost immediately.

"Not only was there synergy between their store automation objectives and the NCR ACS and BR Data solutions, but we also found compatibility between our company philosophies and values," said NCBP Director of Grocery Sales Christopher Kardashian. "Our core business is about supporting the needs of every independent retailer, large or small, whether in western North Dakota or the west side of Chicago."

VeriFone Adds 5,000 Taxicab Advertising Endpoints

VeriFone Holdings has acquired the Clear Channel Taxi Media business from Clear Channel Outdoor. The acquisition is not expected to be material to 2010 results. Financial terms were not disclosed.

VeriFone intends to leverage this well-developed channel into VeriFone's Media Solutions payment-enabled business, where in-taxi digital content is positioned to become one of the most innovative advertising venues as spending moves from traditional to online and digital place-based media.
"VeriFone is delivering Internet-enabled, multi-media technologies at the point-of-sale," said Douglas G. Bergeron, CEO of VeriFone. "As consumers shift to electronic transactions in taxicabs and other media-enabled locations, we have a unique ability to deliver dynamic and interactive campaigns with desirable and measurable advertising efficiencies. This is a very high value services opportunity."

The acquisition includes relationships with a nationwide network of taxi media buyers and more than 20 experienced media sales representatives. With the acquisition, VeriFone has added an additional 5,000 taxicab advertising endpoints to its existing New York City network of 6,500 cabs.

VeriFone's expanded media sales force can now sell advertising to local and national buyers with a reach of 90 percent of all New York taxi cabs. Presently, there are approximately 300,000 taxi fares a day in New York City.

Clear Channel Outdoor entered the taxi advertising business in 2000, with a significant percentage of the business centered on sales of taxi top advertising. In 2007, Clear Channel Outdoor entered the market for in-taxi digital place-based media.

Smartphones Will Be Ringing in the New Year

According to a survey conducted by VDC Research, end users are shifting away from traditional "large" mobile form factors such as notebooks, and gravitating to smartphones and netbooks.

The responses point, in part, to the growing influence that consumer devices are having on enterprise mobility applications. Clearly these devices are becoming increasingly powerful. However, at what point are we sacrificing too much in terms of performance and functionality to be able to support true enterprise mobility applications?
According to VDC's end user survey, just over 45% of respondents are using smartphones for enterprise mobility applications. In addition, almost 60% of respondents agree that smartphones are the target platform for enterprise mobility applications under evaluation.
